CHAMPVA Internal Medicine Doctors

An internist is a primary care doctor for adults, and often the right choice for a CHAMPVA spouse or survivor managing several conditions at once. Internists are also the doctors most likely to already bill Medicare, which is exactly the population that can bill CHAMPVA.

What an internist does

Internal medicine physicians prevent, diagnose, and treat adult diseases. They manage heart disease, diabetes, lung disease, and the interactions between them, and they coordinate specialists when a case gets complicated.

What CHAMPVA covers for internal medicine

Internal medicine visits are covered outpatient care: the $50 yearly deductible, then 25 percent of the allowable amount, with the family's yearly costs capped at $3,000. Diagnostic tests an internist orders are covered without prior approval when medically necessary. If you also have Medicare, CHAMPVA pays second and you will normally have no cost share at all.

Before you book: Internists who see Medicare patients are the strongest CHAMPVA candidates in the directory. Confirm with billing, not the front desk.

Common questions

Does CHAMPVA cover internal medicine visits?

Yes, as standard outpatient care after the yearly deductible, with a 25 percent cost share that counts toward the $3,000 family cap.

Does CHAMPVA pay for lab work and imaging my internist orders?

Yes. Medically necessary diagnostic tests are covered and, according to the VA's provider fact sheet, do not require prior approval.

I have Medicare and CHAMPVA. What will I pay at the internist?

Medicare pays first and CHAMPVA pays second. The VA says the beneficiary will normally have no cost share in that situation.
