The biggest myth in the CHAMPVA world is that turning 65 ends your benefits. False. CHAMPVA continues for life as long as you stay eligible, and paired with Medicare it becomes some of the strongest coverage a retiree can hold. But there is one rule you cannot miss.
The rule: enroll in Medicare or lose CHAMPVA
To keep CHAMPVA at age 65 and beyond, you must enroll in Medicare Part A and Part B if you are entitled to them. Skip Part B and CHAMPVA coverage ends. This is the single most expensive mistake a CHAMPVA beneficiary can make, so mark your 65th birthday enrollment window in ink.
The same applies under 65: if you qualify for Medicare due to disability, you generally need Part A and Part B to keep CHAMPVA.
How the two pay together
Medicare pays first, CHAMPVA pays second. For services covered by both programs, CHAMPVA generally picks up Medicare's deductibles and the 20 percent coinsurance, which often brings your out-of-pocket cost for covered care to zero or near zero.
This combination behaves like Medicare plus a premium-free Medigap plan. Many beneficiaries with both programs never need to buy a Medigap policy at all.
Practical notes
- Choose providers who accept Medicare assignment. That keeps both payers aligned and eliminates balance billing. Every provider in our directory accepts Medicare assignment.
- Medicare Advantage works too, with CHAMPVA paying after the plan, but plan networks reintroduce restrictions that original Medicare plus CHAMPVA avoids. Many advisors favor original Medicare in this combination, and you should run your own numbers.
- Prescriptions: with Medicare, your drug coverage picture changes, and Meds by Mail is only for beneficiaries without other drug coverage. Review your situation before enrolling in or skipping a Part D plan.
- No card confusion: show both cards at every visit and tell billing that CHAMPVA is secondary.
Common questions
Do I lose CHAMPVA when I turn 65?
No, as long as you enroll in Medicare Part A and Part B when entitled. CHAMPVA then continues as your secondary payer with no premium.
Does CHAMPVA pay the Medicare Part B premium?
No. You pay your own Part B premium. In exchange, CHAMPVA typically covers Medicare's deductibles and coinsurance on covered services.
Do I need a Medigap plan if I have CHAMPVA?
Usually not. CHAMPVA already fills most of the gaps Medigap policies are sold to cover. Compare benefits before paying for coverage you may not need.
Do I need Medicare Part D with CHAMPVA?
Not necessarily. CHAMPVA includes prescription coverage, and beneficiaries without other drug coverage can use Meds by Mail at no cost. Some still choose Part D for specific medications or pharmacy access. Compare your medication list before deciding.
