Is a CHAMPVA Supplement Worth It for Your Family?
Answer four quick questions and see your family's yearly cost with and without a supplement, using the plan's own published prices. No sign-up. Nothing you enter leaves your browser.
This site is not paid by any supplement plan. The numbers come from the VA and from the USBA plan profile, both cited below.
How the two totals are figured
| Without a supplement | With the USBA supplement | |
|---|---|---|
| CHAMPVA deductible | $50 per person, $100 per family | Same. The plan does not pay it. |
| Your cost share | 25 percent of the allowed amount | You pay the first $250 per person ($500 family max). The plan pays the rest. |
| Premium | None | Quarterly rate by age, plus $84 a quarter per child |
| Yearly ceiling | $3,000 family cap set by CHAMPVA | Deductibles plus premium |
Because CHAMPVA already caps your family's cost share at $3,000 a year, a supplement can never save more than the gap between that cap and what you would still pay under the plan. For a healthy family it is usually a net loss. For a family with steady medical needs it can be a real saving and a predictable budget.
Before you buy any supplement
- Pre-existing conditions. Under the USBA plan, a condition treated in the 6 months before coverage starts is not covered until the plan has been in force 6 months. The rule is waived if you enroll within 30 days of your CHAMPVA coverage starting.
- Where it is sold. USBA's plan is not sold in Alaska, Colorado, Maine, New Hampshire, Puerto Rico, Utah or Washington.
- Membership. You join the sponsoring association to buy. Ask whether a membership fee comes on top of the premium.
- Compare two. Ask GEA and SelmanCo for a written quote and run the same two totals.

Common questions
How does this calculator decide whether a supplement is worth it?
It compares two yearly totals for your family. Without a supplement you pay CHAMPVA's $50 deductible plus 25 percent of the allowed amount, never more than the $3,000 yearly cap. With a USBA supplement you pay the same $50 deductible, then the first $250 of your cost share, plus the premium. The plan pays the rest of the cost share. Whichever total is lower is the better deal for that amount of care.
Where do the prices come from?
USBA publishes its CHAMPVA Supplement rates by age in its plan profile, form CV-PlanProfile-Retail-5928-092025. The rates here are the regular rates after the first year. New members pay 11 percent less for the first 12 months, except in Ohio and Kentucky. Rates rise when you move into a new age band and can change, so confirm the current price before you enroll.
Why not compare the GEA or VFW plans too?
GEA, administered by SelmanCo, does not publish its prices, and the VFW Insurance Program points you to its own page for current details. We only calculate with numbers a plan has published. Ask those sellers for a written quote and use the same two totals to compare.
Does ChampvaDoctors.com earn money if I buy a supplement?
No. This site is not paid by any supplement plan, and this calculator is not an ad. If that ever changes, this page will say so at the top.
Is anything I type sent anywhere?
No. Your numbers stay in your browser. The site only counts that the calculator was used and which general result was shown (worth it, not worth it, or close), never what you typed.
I am 65 or older, or I have Medicare. Do I need a supplement?
Usually not. The plans are for people under 65 who are not on Medicare. With Medicare paying first and CHAMPVA second, most covered costs are already paid in full between the two programs.
