CHAMPVA Mental Health Coverage, Explained

Updated 2026-07-13 · Reviewed against current VA CHAMPVA program materials

A caring provider reassures a patient by holding her hands

Military families carry heavy loads, and CHAMPVA's mental health benefit is broader than most people expect. Therapy, psychiatry, and substance use treatment are all covered. Here is how to use the benefit and how to find a therapist who will bill CHAMPVA.

What is covered

  • Outpatient therapy with psychiatrists, psychologists, licensed clinical social workers, and other CHAMPVA-authorized mental health professionals.
  • Psychiatric medication management.
  • Inpatient psychiatric care and partial hospitalization, with preauthorization.
  • Substance use disorder treatment, with preauthorization for many program types.
  • Telehealth therapy, which has quietly become the easiest way for CHAMPVA families to get consistent care, especially in rural areas.

Standard cost sharing applies: after your deductible, CHAMPVA pays 75 percent of the allowable and you pay 25 percent, all counting toward the $3,000 family cap.

Which therapists can bill CHAMPVA

CHAMPVA authorizes specific provider types, including psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, licensed clinical social workers, psychiatric nurse specialists, and certain licensed counselors and marriage and family therapists who meet CHAMPVA's supervision and licensure requirements. The safest candidates are therapists who already bill Medicare, since their credential types map cleanly onto CHAMPVA's authorized list.

Good news for your search: Medicare only began covering licensed professional counselors and marriage and family therapists recently, so the pool of Medicare-enrolled therapists is growing every year, and our directory includes psychologists and clinical social workers in every state.

Preauthorization: when you need it

Routine outpatient therapy sessions generally do not require preauthorization. Advance approval is required for inpatient psychiatric admissions, partial hospitalization, residential treatment for children and teens, and some intensive substance use programs. When a higher level of care is on the table, call CHAMPVA at 800-733-8387 before admission, except in emergencies, where you should seek care first and notify afterward.

A practical path to a therapist who takes CHAMPVA

  1. Search our directory for clinical psychologists and clinical social workers in your city.
  2. Call and say: "I have CHAMPVA, a federal program that pays like Medicare. Do you accept Medicare patients? Then you can bill CHAMPVA the same way."
  3. Ask about telehealth if local availability is thin. A therapist licensed in your state can usually see you by video from anywhere in the state.
