What a podiatrist does
Podiatrists diagnose and treat conditions of the foot and ankle: injuries, fractures, plantar fasciitis, bunions, infections, ingrown nails, and the foot complications of diabetes and poor circulation. Many perform foot surgery.
What CHAMPVA covers for podiatry
Medically necessary podiatric care is covered outpatient care under CHAMPVA, with no referral needed. Federal regulation excludes routine foot care, specifically the removal of corns or calluses and the trimming of toenails, except when it is medically necessary because of a systemic disease such as severe diabetes affecting the lower limbs. Diabetic foot exams, wound care, and surgery for a diagnosed condition are covered.
