What a chiropractor does
Chiropractors treat back, neck, and joint pain mainly through spinal manipulation. Because CHAMPVA will not pay for those services, a visit is an out-of-pocket expense no matter which chiropractor you see.
What CHAMPVA covers for chiropractic
The exclusion is in 38 CFR 17.272, which lists chiropractic and naturopathic services, and acupuncture, as services CHAMPVA does not cover. What CHAMPVA does cover for the same problems: evaluation by your primary care doctor, imaging, physical therapy, orthopedic and neurology consults, pain management, injections, and surgery when medically necessary, all without a referral. If you also have Medicare, Medicare's own limited chiropractic benefit is separate from CHAMPVA and follows Medicare's rules.
