What an audiologist does
Audiologists test hearing and balance, diagnose hearing loss, and fit hearing aids. Many work alongside ear, nose, and throat physicians who treat the medical causes of hearing loss.
What CHAMPVA covers for audiology
Regulation excludes hearing aids and other auditory sensory enhancing devices from CHAMPVA. Hearing evaluations are not named in the exclusions; a diagnostic hearing test ordered to evaluate a medical condition, such as sudden hearing loss, an ear infection, or balance problems, is handled as medical care. Treatment of the underlying condition by an ENT physician is covered specialist care. Confirm with CHAMPVA before a visit whose only purpose is a hearing aid fitting.
