Meds by Mail: The Free CHAMPVA Pharmacy Benefit

Updated 2026-07-13 · Reviewed against current VA CHAMPVA program materials

A physician's desk with prescriptions and a laptop

The single most generous piece of CHAMPVA is one many families never use: free maintenance medications delivered to your door. No copay. No deductible. No cost share. Here is who qualifies and exactly how to set it up.

What Meds by Mail is

Meds by Mail (MbM) is CHAMPVA's mail-order pharmacy. It dispenses maintenance medications, the ones you take on an ongoing basis, in up to 90-day supplies at zero cost to you. Not "low cost." Zero. No deductible, no 25 percent share, no shipping fee.

Who can use it

Meds by Mail is for CHAMPVA beneficiaries who have no other prescription drug coverage. That includes no Medicare Part D, no employer drug plan, and no marketplace drug coverage. If CHAMPVA is your only coverage, or your other coverage has no drug benefit, you likely qualify.

How to start

  1. Ask your doctor to write your maintenance prescriptions for a 90-day supply with refills.
  2. Send the prescriptions to Meds by Mail with the MbM order form, or have your provider submit them electronically where available.
  3. Refills are requested by phone or mail using the refill slip that arrives with each shipment. Order about three weeks before you run out.

Current forms, addresses, and servicing center phone numbers are on the VA's CHAMPVA pharmacy page, or call CHAMPVA at 800-733-8387 and ask for Meds by Mail enrollment guidance.

What it does not cover

Meds by Mail handles maintenance drugs. Antibiotics, painkillers for an acute injury, and other short-term prescriptions still go through a retail pharmacy, where the normal CHAMPVA deductible and 25 percent cost share apply. Controlled substances face additional rules, and refrigerated or urgent medications may not suit mail order. Keep a local pharmacy for the short-term stuff and let MbM carry the recurring load.

Common questions

Is Meds by Mail really free?

Yes. For eligible beneficiaries, maintenance medications through Meds by Mail carry no copay, no cost share, and no deductible.

Can I use Meds by Mail if I have Medicare Part D?

No. Meds by Mail is only for beneficiaries with no other prescription drug coverage. Weigh this before enrolling in Part D, because joining a drug plan ends MbM eligibility.

How long does Meds by Mail take?

Plan for two to three weeks from order to delivery. Order refills early and keep a small buffer of medication on hand.
